Cardio During Ramadan: Walking, Running, and Intervals

Plan walking, running, intervals, and endurance work during Ramadan by matching intensity to timing, heat, hydration, recovery, and experience.

Cardio during Ramadan can range from an easy walk to race preparation. The right timing and dose depend on intensity, heat, fasting length, hydration access, experience, and the reason for the session.

Match the workout to the time

Cardio typeBetter timing option
Easy 15 to 30 minute walkBefore iftar or after a meal settles
Comfortable steady runAfter iftar with fluid available
Hard intervalsAfter iftar, or another time with food and fluid
Long endurance workoutFed and hydrated window with an individual plan

Before iftar, use the talk test. You should be able to speak in full sentences during an easy session. Shorten the route, avoid heat, and finish near sunset. Do not begin a route that leaves you far from shade, transport, or help.

Reduce one variable first

Keep the activity familiar and reduce duration or intensity. A runner who normally completes eight hard intervals might use four to six at a controlled pace after iftar. Someone maintaining health can replace intervals with walking during a demanding week.

A systematic review found that many performance measures were unchanged during Ramadan, while repeated sprint and some power measures could decline (review). Football research also found late-afternoon and high-intensity performance concerns in several studies (review). These findings mainly concern athletes and do not predict every individual response.

Plan heat and fluid

Use indoor cooling or cooler hours. Spread fluid between iftar and suhoor and include normal meals. Stop for dizziness, confusion, fainting, chest symptoms, loss of coordination, or unusual severe weakness. Confusion in heat can indicate an emergency (CDC guidance).

Race preparation during Ramadan needs a coach and sports-health plan, especially when competition occurs while fasting. People with medical conditions or relevant medicines need individualized clinical advice.

How Rizanah helps

In the Rizanah mobile app, fasting settings can follow prayer-based or custom eating windows. Meals includes food and water logging, while Train keeps your weekly workout plan and completed workout history. Rizanah does not read sleep or symptoms and does not automatically change a workout because you are fasting, so you remain responsible for choosing a safe time and adjusting or stopping when needed.

Visit Rizanah to find the mobile app for iOS and Android.

The main idea

Walk easily when fasted, place demanding cardio where fluid is available, avoid heat, and reduce duration or intensity when sleep and recovery change.
