An aggressive bodybuilding cut during Ramadan combines a short eating window with deliberate energy restriction. That can make it harder to obtain enough protein, carbohydrate, micronutrients, fluid, and sleep. A modest goal or maintenance phase is often easier to manage.

Compare the approaches

ApproachLikely tradeoff
Aggressive deficitFaster scale change with greater fatigue and muscle-retention risk
Modest deficitSlower change with more room for food and recovery
MaintenanceBest chance to preserve performance during a demanding schedule

Scale loss during Ramadan can include changes in water, stored carbohydrate, digestion, fat, and lean tissue. A 2025 meta-analysis found small average reductions that tended to return toward pre-Ramadan values afterward (meta-analysis). A fast scale drop does not prove a successful fat-loss phase.

Use a weekly trend under similar conditions, and include strength, sleep, mood, and normal daily function in the review.

Protect the essentials

Keep two or more strength sessions, reduce unnecessary sets, and avoid repeated failure. Include protein at iftar, a later meal or snack, and suhoor. Keep carbohydrate around demanding workouts and use dietary fat to help meet energy needs. Spread fluid through the night.

A sports-nutrition position stand notes that higher protein needs may apply to lean, resistance-trained people in energy restriction, but exact targets require context (position stand). More protein cannot correct a dangerously low total intake.

Stop the cut when health changes

Persistent dizziness, fainting, worsening sleep, irritability, declining strength, menstrual disruption, injury, obsessive tracking, or repeated inability to meet basic nutrition are reasons to stop and seek qualified help. People who are underweight, pregnant, breastfeeding, growing, ill, or recovering from an eating disorder should not begin a cut without appropriate professional care.

How Rizanah helps

In the Rizanah mobile app, fasting settings can follow prayer-based or custom eating windows. Meals includes food and water logging, while Train keeps your weekly workout plan and completed workout history. Rizanah does not read sleep or symptoms and does not automatically change a workout because you are fasting, so you remain responsible for choosing a safe time and adjusting or stopping when needed.

Visit Rizanah to find the mobile app for iOS and Android.

The main idea

Do not stack a severe deficit on top of fasting, disrupted sleep, and hard workouts. Maintain or use a modest change while protecting strength, food quality, fluids, and health.
