Maintaining muscle during Ramadan is a meaningful bodybuilding goal. You do not need your highest workout volume, a new supplement stack, or perfect meals at exact times. Keep enough strength work, protein, food, fluid, and sleep to support the tissue you already built.
Keep the important work
Use two to four strength sessions each week according to experience and recovery. Keep familiar compound and isolation movements, but reduce total sets when sleep or hydration is limited. Finish most sets with one to three controlled repetitions available rather than reaching failure repeatedly.
| Keep | Reduce first |
|---|---|
| Familiar movements | Extra accessory sets |
| Moderate to heavy working loads | Repeated failure work |
| Good technique | Long, exhausting sessions |
| Two or more weekly muscle exposures | Unnecessary exercise variety |
A meta-analysis found no consistent reduction in strength across the included Ramadan studies, while some repeated sprint and power outcomes declined (systematic review). Most participants were athletes, not every type of bodybuilder, so use your performance and recovery record.
Eat enough across the window
Include protein at iftar, a later meal or snack, and suhoor. A sports-nutrition position stand reports that 1.4 to 2.0 grams per kilogram daily is sufficient for many exercising adults, with individual variation (position stand). Carbohydrate supports lifting, while dietary fat helps meet energy needs. Aggressive restriction makes muscle maintenance harder.
Use supplements carefully
Protein powder and creatine are optional. Verify the complete product and current halal certification, and avoid proprietary blends that hide ingredient amounts. Ask a clinician before creatine or high-protein dieting when kidney disease, pregnancy, medicines, or another condition creates uncertainty.
Judge the month correctly
Body weight can change from water, stored carbohydrate, meal timing, and digestion. Use repeated measurements, gym performance, and how clothing fits rather than reacting to one scale reading. A temporary change does not prove muscle loss.
How Rizanah helps
In the Rizanah mobile app, fasting settings can follow prayer-based or custom eating windows. Meals includes food and water logging, while Train keeps your weekly workout plan and completed workout history. Rizanah does not read sleep or symptoms and does not automatically change a workout because you are fasting, so you remain responsible for choosing a safe time and adjusting or stopping when needed.
Visit Rizanah to find the mobile app for iOS and Android.
The main idea
Preserve familiar lifting, remove unnecessary volume, eat enough protein and total food, hydrate through the night, and protect sleep before trying to improve everything at once.
